Hello gardening friends….here is an update on my garden…
Pictured are a few pots of cow peas and beans. The sticks are in place to deter cats and the ever-digging squirrels in my backyard. I typically use old chopsticks, bamboo skewers, twigs or plastic utensils placed on top or in the soil.
The Shasta Daisies are blooming!!!

A few tomatoes beckoning to become fried green tomatoes…alas I must resist the temptation for now.
I am pleased to report the root aphids are under control. I disposed of 3 squash and 3 beans plants and the soil around them. For now, that small area is isolated until the beneficial nematodes I added are incorporated. There are no other signs of the bugs in the garden, but I will continue to be vigilant.

Your garden looks great! Still struggling with some tomato leaf curl, but otherwise my garden is enjoying lots of sun and too much humidity (at least for me).

I never thought about using bamboo, instead I use a roll of scotch tape. I don’t have a cat anymore but my little dog seems to think that every pot in the house that’s near the floor is fair game for digging and putting treats into.

I will have to try the tape method. The cats belong to my neighbors and scroll over to do a bit of hunting occasionally.

I’d not heard of cow peas! I wish you best of luck with them. We only have birds, insects and slugs that will eat our flowers and veggies. I love squirrels and deer, but at a distance and not eating my plants!
Super happy to see the shasta daisy. I planted some last year from seed, and have first blooms this year. I think they are lovely and underrated!

Yes, I am in the US. Cow peas are quite delicious and very easy to grow in higher temperate areas like the southern US. I grew my shasta daisies from seeds and I divide them every couple of years. They are a true favorite of mine and I get so happy when they bloom.

Your chopstick idea to keep the critters away is genius! I just transplanted chard from my garden to a clay pot because the zucchini leaves and strawberry leaves are like a rainforest canopy over the chard and it’s getting no light. I’ve been worried about not only the squirrels but my dogs having salad for lunch.

I didn’t get out there in time. Something chewed my transplanted chard down to the dirt. Ha! Live and learn!
